చాలా రోజులైంది. పత్రికా విలేఖరిగా నా అనుభవాలను ముచ్చటించి. రోజూవారీ దైనందిక జీవితంలో సమయం మన చేతుల్లో ఉండదు. ఎన్నో విషయాలు పంచుకోవాలని ఉంటుంది. కానీ, ఒక దానికొకటి ఆలోచనలకు పొంతన దొరకదు. ఏదిఏమైనప్పటికి, చాలా రోజుల తర్వాత ఏ అనుభవాన్ని వివరించాలా అనుకుంటుంటే, నాకు రెండు విషయాలు తట్టయి. ఒకటి మేము ఆస్ట్రేలియా వచ్చిన కొత్తలో ఇండియా క్రికెట్ జట్టు ఆస్ట్రేలియా పర్యటనకు వచ్చింది. పెర్త్ లో ఒక టెస్ట్ మ్యాచ్ జరిగింది. అది చూడటానికి మేము కుటుంబసమేతంగా వెళ్లామని చెప్పక్కర్లేదనుకుంటాను. మన భారతీయులందరూ క్రికెట్ లో పుట్టి, క్రికెట్ లో పెరిగుతాయరాయే. మరోక అనుభవం సంగీతానికి సంబంధించినది. క్రికెట్ గురించి మరోసారి చెప్పుకుందాం. ప్రస్తుతం సంగీత కార్యక్రమానికి సంబంధించినది. నాకు ఏదో కొద్దిగా సంగీతంలో ప్రవేశం ఉంది. అలాగే ఆసక్తి అపారంగా ఉంది. అప్పట్లో విరివిగానే కార్యక్రమాలకు వెడుతుండేదాన్ని. ఇప్పుడు కూడా వెడుతుంటాను కానీ, చాలావరకు అవి సాంప్రదాయ పాశ్చాత్య సంగీత కార్యక్రమాలు. ఇకపోతే ఇప్పుడు చెప్పబోయేది, మారుతున్న కాలంతో ప్రేక్షకులను చేరడానికి వివిధ మాధ్యమాలను కళాకారులు ఎంచుకుంటుంటారు. 2009లో వివిధ దేశాలలో ఉన్న కర్ణాటక సంగీతప్రియులను ఆకట్టుకోవడానికి అనుకుంటాను, ఒక సంగీత కార్యక్రమాన్ని సినిమాలాగా వెండితెరకు ఎక్కించి విడుదల చేశారు. అలాంటి ఒక కార్యక్రమం గురించి నేను రాసిన సమీక్షను మీతో పంచుకుంటున్నాను. అయితే, విశేషం ఇది ఇంగ్లీషులో రాసాను. ఎందుకు అని ప్రశ్నించకండి. అప్పట్లో కంప్యూటర్లలో తెలుగు టైపింగ్ ఇప్పట్లాగా సులువు కాదు. అంతేకాకుండా, బ్లాగ్స్ కొత్తగా వచ్చిన సమయమది. మీకు ఇదివరలో చెప్పాను కదా, నాకు ఇంగ్లీషు అంటే బెరుకని. అది మనకు కొరుకుడుపడని భాషని. అందుకనే నా ఇంగ్లీషు భాషకు మెరుగులుదిద్దుకోవడానికి నేను ఒక బ్లాగ్ పెట్టి ఇంగ్లీషులో వ్యాసాలు రాశాను. ఇంతకు మునుపెన్నడు ఇంగ్లీషులో రాయలేదా అంటే రాసాను. నా మొట్టమొదటి వ్యాసమే ఇంగ్లీషులో రాశాను. అయినా ఇప్పటికీ నా ఇంగ్లీషు భాష మీద నాకు నమ్మకంలేదు. అందుకని ఈ వ్యాసంలోని తప్పులకు క్షంతవ్యురాలిని. వేదికపై ప్రేక్షకుల హర్షధ్వానాల మధ్య సాగాల్సిన ఒక కచేరిని, వెండితెరపైకి ఎక్కించడం అప్పుడే కాదు, ఇప్పుడు కూడా నాకెందుకో నచ్చట్లేదు. 2009లో నేను రాసిన ఈ వ్యాసాన్ని మీరు కూడా చదవండి. నాతో ఏకీభవించినా, ఏకీభవించకపోయినా పర్వాలేదు. మీ ఉద్దేశం వీలైతే కింద కామెంట్లో తెలపండి.
Margazchi Raagam, a digital concert
When my friend invited me to watch a musical movie in theatre, I walked in not knowing what is stored for me ahead! Within few minutes I realized I’m not watching any so called parallel or art movie based on music. It took only few moments to grasp the whole concept of the movie. It is a musical concert on big screen.
Digital, Dolby six track sound of carnatic music on digital cinema, Wow! Not exactly! Experiencing the carnatic music on 70mm screen is not my taste. Many might say this is a new beginning in the world of music. I don’t think so. I would always prefer a live concert than a screen concert. By saying this I’m not denying the brave and ambitious efforts of the makers. A joint venture of Aghal Films and Real Image conceived and directed by Jayendra, “Margazhi Raagam”, presented Bombay Jayashri and T M Krishna in this musical feature. Each performed three solos each and two Jugalbandhis.
This digital concert has swara, raga, laya, shrtui and every element of music except the connection with the audience. Involvement of audience and eye-contact between the singer and audience is totally lacking. “Sisurvethi, pasurvethi, vethi gana rasam phanihi”, well known Sanskrit axiom says music has the power of impressing the child, animal and the universe alike. But does Margazhi Raagam impresses everyone? One may say this feature is for the music lovers. At the same time this concert is for the one who know about carnatic music. The one who know about Kamas or Javalli, raga Mayamalavagowlai or Ritigowlai may able to relate to this type of concerts. If you are a music novice then this movie is not for you. If the director says this type of experiment will draw people towards carnatic music, I really doubt it!
A cinematic concert is not and cannot be a substitute for live concert. If you really like music why go to a movie hall instead enjoy it live. Releasing music DVDs is another thing and making it to big screen is altogether a different ball game. Especially artists need to be articulate. In this case audience don’t feel that. Initially I am more involved into the sets and cinematography, backdrops etc, etc. To get focus back to the music is an effort. Moreover I expected a dialogue from the artists. I was waiting till the end for someone to explain me about those raaga’s, but no such effort was made. Even when Krishna and Jayashri performed Jughalbandhi, it failed to create those magic moments, usually you find in Jughalbandhi. Both the artists were absorbed among themselves. It’s like nothing can move us! Many times when Jayashri performed it looked as if she is doing riaaz at her home. She failed to connect to her own orchestra. These are certain rudiments may go unnoticed in live concerts but cannot be ignored on big screen.
In short, Music is divine, let leave it that way!
